Quick answer

What size is the Myanmar passport photo?

Applying inside Myanmar, the passport office lists no photograph among the documents to bring: you need your citizenship scrutiny card, household list and Smart Card with a UID number. Applying through an embassy abroad, bring printed colour photos on a white background taken within 6 months. Size and number depend on the embassy: three 35 x 45 mm prints in Canberra, three 4 x 6 cm prints in Phnom Penh, two in Paris and one for a Singapore renewal.

Ordinary Myanmar passports are handled by the Myanmar Passport Issuing Board. Inside the country you book an appointment online on the board's website, pay with KBZPay or an MPU bank card enabled for online payments, and then attend the Myanmar Passport Issuing Office in Yangon or a branch office on the date the system gives you. The website lists seven categories of ordinary passport, including PV for visits, PJ for jobs abroad, PE for education, PS for seafarers and PT for dependants.

The office's checklist for every applicant is about identity papers. It asks for the citizenship scrutiny card, the household list and the Smart Card carrying a UID number, each as an original with two copies, plus a birth certificate for anyone under 10. It names no photograph and no photo size, so there is no print to prepare for an appointment in Myanmar.

Citizens living abroad renew or replace their passports through a Myanmar embassy, and that is where printed photos come in. Each embassy publishes its own list, so the number of prints and their size change from one mission to the next. The white background is the one point they all share.

Key requirements

  • No photo on the domestic checklist

The Myanmar Passport Issuing Office lists what every applicant must bring: the citizenship scrutiny card, the household list and the Smart Card with a UID number, as originals with two copies each, and a birth certificate for anyone under 10. A photograph is not on the list.

  • UID proof since April 2024

From 22 April 2024 the office asks applicants to bring proof of the UID number issued by the Ministry of Immigration and Population, which it uses to check citizenship. Applicants without it are told to arrange it with the ministry quickly.

  • White background abroad

Every embassy list we read asks for a white background: Paris, Singapore, Phnom Penh and Canberra. None of them mentions any other colour.

  • Size and count vary by embassy

Canberra asks for three photos at 35 x 45 mm and Phnom Penh for three at 4 x 6 cm. Paris asks for two colour passport photos, and Singapore for one with a renewal and two with a lost passport, without giving a measurement.

  • Recent, straight-on photos

Paris and Singapore both want photos taken within the last 6 months. Paris adds that they must be colour biometric photos, with you looking directly at the camera and both edges of your face clearly visible.

  • Some embassies photograph you too

The Singapore embassy says it has no photo-taking service, so you must bring your own print. It also takes your photo on site, to be used in the machine-readable passport.

  • Check your collection slip

When you receive the slip for collecting your passport, the office asks you to check the English spelling of your name, your date of birth, sex and place of birth yourself.

Do's and don'ts

Do

  • Book your appointment online and pay with KBZPay or an MPU card enabled for online payments.
  • Bring originals and two copies of each identity document to the office in Myanmar.
  • Use a plain white background for photos you give to an embassy.
  • Read your own embassy's list for the photo size and the number of prints.
  • Have photos taken no more than 6 months before you apply abroad.
  • Check the details on your collection slip before you leave the office.

Don't

  • Do not assume one print size works at every embassy: 35 x 45 mm and 4 x 6 cm are both in use.
  • Do not expect the Singapore embassy to make your print photo for you.
  • Do not send Paris or Singapore photos older than 6 months.
  • Do not leave out the UID proof when you apply inside Myanmar.

Babies and children

Inside Myanmar, an applicant under 10 adds a birth certificate, as an original with two copies, to the standard identity documents. The checklist sets no photo for children either.

Abroad, the Singapore embassy's list for a newborn baby's passport asks for applications from the parents and the baby, the birth certificate, the parents' marriage certificate, identity cards and passports, and names no photograph. The Washington embassy says new passports for a child born to two Myanmar citizen parents, like replacements for lost passports, are referred to the passport board and issued only once the board approves.

There is no photo upload for a Myanmar passport. Inside Myanmar the online step covers booking and payment only, and the papers you bring to the office are identity documents.

Embassies abroad want physical prints. A digital photo can be cropped to the size your embassy names, such as 35 x 45 mm or 4 x 6 cm, and printed on a 4x6 inch sheet at a photo counter. Paris asks for colour biometric photos, so do not print in black and white.

Where to submit the photo

Inside Myanmar, book online and then attend the Myanmar Passport Issuing Office at the corner of Saya San Road and Set Hmu (1) Street, Bahan Township, Yangon, or a branch office. Branches operate in cities including Nay Pyi Taw, Mandalay, Myitkyina, Taunggyi, Mawlamyine, Pathein and Sittwe. A February 2024 notice says the Mandalay, Pathein, Nay Pyi Taw and Bago branches serve only people on a household list in their own state or region.

Abroad, apply to the Myanmar embassy covering the country where you live. Paris takes consular applications by post with a self-addressed registered return envelope. Canberra handles renewals by post and asks for a prepaid return envelope with a tracking label. Phnom Penh takes renewals in person at the embassy.

Myanmar passport photo FAQ

There is no single size. The passport office in Myanmar lists no photo at all. Embassies set their own: Canberra asks for 35 x 45 mm and Phnom Penh for 4 x 6 cm, while Paris and Singapore only say passport size. All of them want a white background.

Not according to the office's published checklist. It lists the citizenship scrutiny card, household list and UID Smart Card, as originals with two copies, plus a birth certificate for children under 10. Ask the office before your appointment if you want to be certain.

It depends on the embassy. Singapore asks for one with a renewal and two with a lost passport, Paris for two, and Canberra and Phnom Penh for three each. Bring the number your embassy names.

Some do as well as asking for prints. The Singapore embassy takes your photo on site for the machine-readable passport, but still asks you to bring one print and says it offers no photo-taking service for it.

Paris and Singapore require photos taken within the last 6 months. Paris also asks for colour biometric photos with you looking straight at the camera and both edges of your face showing.

Some embassies allow it. Paris receives applications by post and asks for a stamped, registered return envelope, and Canberra asks for a prepaid return envelope with tracking. Phnom Penh takes renewals in person.

It is a number issued by the Ministry of Immigration and Population and used to check citizenship. Since 22 April 2024 the passport office asks applicants to bring proof of it with their other identity documents.
