Jordan passport photo requirements
The 2 × 2 in photo rules set by Civil Status and Passports Department for the Jordan passport, with the official wording and sources.
Quick answer
What size is the Jordan passport photo?
The Civil Status and Passports Department (CSPD) publishes no print size for passport photos used in Jordan. Its offices ask for two colour personal photos, which the clerk scans, and online renewal takes an uploaded photo. CSPD's photo guide wants a plain one-colour background, a neutral mouth, open eyes and no sunglasses. Through the embassy in Washington the photo is 2 x 2 inches (51 x 51 mm), in colour, on white.
Jordanian passports are issued by the Civil Status and Passports Department, part of the Ministry of Interior. You can renew in person at a CSPD office, online through the department's e-services portal, or through a Jordanian embassy if you live abroad. Online renewal needs an active e-services account and, from the age of 16, a smart ID card with the hand fingerprint activated. It is open when the passport has expired, has fewer than 180 days left or has no free pages.
How the photo reaches CSPD depends on the channel. At an office you hand in two colour personal photos and the acceptance officer scans the photo into the system. Online, uploading the personal photo is one step of the application. CSPD publishes its photo guidance as an illustrated sheet based on ICAO Doc 9303 rather than a size chart, so it gives no print dimensions for applications made in Jordan.
Embassies set their own print rules. If you apply on paper through the embassy in Washington, in person or by post, its forms ask for recent colour photos 2 x 2 inches in size on a white background. The Berlin embassy also asks for two recent photos on white. Washington points citizens who hold a valid smart ID card to online renewal instead.

Key requirements
- Plain background of one colour
CSPD's photo guide checks that the background is empty and of a single colour, with no extra details behind you. The embassies in Washington and Berlin go further and ask for a white background.
- Neutral mouth, eyes open
The guide rejects a smile and an open mouth: the expression must be neutral, with no visible teeth. Both eyes must be fully open, and your head must face the camera straight on, not tilted up or turned aside.
- Balanced light and natural colour
Light and colour must be balanced so your features are clear, with no shadow on the face, no reflection of the camera flash and no red eye. Skin tone must look natural, neither too bright nor washed out.
- Sharp, at the right distance
A blurred or hazy photo is refused, and so is a dark one. CSPD's samples also reject faces taken too close to or too far from the camera.
- Two colour prints at an office
For a renewal at a CSPD office the document list asks for two colour personal photos. The acceptance officer scans the photo into the system with the other attachments.
- 2 x 2 inches through Washington
The photo box on the Washington embassy's application forms reads recent, colour, white background, 2X2. Its checklist asks for two recent photos with your name written on the back.
Do's and don'ts
Do
- Use a plain background of one colour, and white if you apply through an embassy
- Look straight at the camera with both eyes fully open
- Keep a neutral expression with your mouth closed
- Light your face evenly, without shadows or flash glare
- Bring two colour photos to a renewal at a CSPD office
- Write your name on the back of prints sent to the Washington embassy
Don't
- Do not smile or show your teeth
- Do not wear sunglasses or coloured contact lenses
- Do not let glasses frames cover your pupils
- Do not wear a hat or cap; only religious head coverings are allowed
- Do not include toys or another person in a child's photo
- Do not submit a blurred, dark or washed-out photo
Sample photos
How a Jordan passport photo should look, and the mistakes that most often get photos rejected. Each example is drawn to this document's 2 × 2 in and background colour.
Illustrations, not real photos. The official rules above always take priority; some documents do not allow glasses at all.
Glasses
Prescription glasses are allowed if the frames do not cover the pupils. CSPD's photo guide says that glasses, if worn, must be medical and must not cover the pupil of the eye, and that sunglasses and coloured contact lenses must not be worn. One of its rejected samples shows a frame running across the eye.
The same guide rejects photos with a reflection of the camera light, so lenses that catch the flash can get a photo refused.
Headwear and religious dress
A head covering is allowed for religious reasons only. CSPD's photo guide states that the applicant may wear a head covering for religious reasons only, and its rejected samples include two men wearing hats. The accepted sample is a woman in a dark hijab with her face uncovered.
The face itself must stay visible. The guide marks as rejected a veil that covers the face and a headscarf that throws a shadow across it, and its eye checks reject hair falling over the face.
Babies and children
Parents apply for their children. On CSPD's online service a father or mother may renew a minor's passport while the marriage lasts; a divorced or widowed mother needs a temporary guardianship deed from the Sharia court. Through the Washington embassy, applicants under 16 also need the father's written consent and a copy of his passport.
CSPD's photo guide has two sections on children. The child's face must point at the camera with the mouth closed, and only one face may appear. Its rejected samples show a baby looking aside, a laughing child, another person in the background and a child holding a toy.
Printed and digital photos
In Jordan the office route uses prints: two colour personal photos for a renewal at a CSPD office, scanned in by the acceptance officer. The online route takes a digital photo instead, uploaded as one step of the application; CSPD publishes no pixel size or file limit for it.
Abroad, the embassy decides. Washington asks citizens with a valid smart ID card to renew online. Without one, you apply on paper in person or by post (USPS or UPS only) with two recent 2 x 2 inch colour photos on white, your name on the back. If you apply online, choose the ordinary passport rather than the electronic one, because the embassy cannot issue e-passports. Berlin asks for two recent photos on white for both in-person and postal renewals.
A digital photo can be cropped to the size you need, or printed on a 4x6 inch sheet at a photo counter and cut out.
Where to submit the photo
In Jordan, renew at the nearest civil status office: take a queue number, hand the application to the acceptance clerk, have it approved, pay at the cashier and collect the printed passport. Online renewal runs through CSPD's e-services site; you can collect from an office or have the passport delivered by Jordan Post or Aramex, and the courier takes your handprint on delivery. Military personnel cannot apply online and must attend an office.
Outside Jordan, apply through the Jordanian embassy. Washington makes a video call to confirm your identity before it sends a passport out, Berlin does the same for postal applications, and Washington completes a renewal only once the authorities in Jordan have approved it.

Jordan passport photo FAQ
CSPD publishes no print size for applications made in Jordan. Its offices ask for two colour personal photos, and the online service takes an uploaded photo. If you apply through the embassy in Washington, its forms specify a recent colour photo on a white background measuring 2 x 2 inches (51 x 51 mm). Other embassies can set their own rules, so check with the one handling your application.
No. CSPD's photo guide, based on ICAO Doc 9303, requires a neutral mouth: no smile, no visible teeth and no unsuitable expression. A sample with an open, smiling mouth is marked as rejected. Keep your mouth closed and look straight at the camera.
Yes. CSPD allows a head covering for religious reasons only, and its accepted sample shows a woman in a hijab with her face fully visible. A veil over the face is rejected, as is a scarf that shades the face. Hats and caps worn for other reasons are not allowed.
Prescription glasses are acceptable if the frames leave your pupils clear. Sunglasses and coloured contact lenses are not allowed under CSPD's ICAO-based photo guide, and a reflection of the camera light is a reason for refusal.
Yes, on CSPD's e-services portal, if you have an active account and, from age 16, a smart ID card with the hand fingerprint activated. The passport must have expired, have fewer than 180 days left or be full. You upload your personal photo during the application. Military personnel must apply in person.
The Washington embassy asks for two recent personal photos with your name on the back for paper applications made in person or by USPS or UPS. The Berlin embassy also asks for two recent photos on a white background. If you renew online with a valid smart ID card, Washington says the documents are not brought to the embassy.
CSPD's own guide asks only for a plain background of one colour with no extra details. The Washington and Berlin embassies both specify white, so a plain white background meets every channel that publishes a rule.
