Quick answer

What size is the Yemen visa photo?

A Yemeni visa application needs a recent colour photo on a white background. The Hague asks for one photo of 6x4 cm (a 40 x 60 mm portrait) with no glasses or hat, and Washington's form asks for two photos of 6x4. On the Authority's e-visa portal, the multi-entry visa lists a 4*6 electronic photo on white. A visa sticker is issued only after the Immigration, Passports and Nationality Authority approves the application, and tourist visas are restricted.

Yemeni visas are granted in two steps. The Immigration, Passports and Nationality Authority of the Ministry of Interior, through its e-visa portal, approves the application, which is normally lodged by a host in Yemen such as an employer, relative, university or licensed travel agency. The visa sticker is then issued by a Yemeni embassy or consulate abroad, or for some urgent and special visas at a port of entry. Frankfurt says the permission must be in place before you apply to the consulate.

Availability is limited. Washington states that it is not issuing tourist visas, and The Hague says entry visa requests are on hold except for foreigners of Yemeni origin, staff of international organisations, journalists and media delegations, and diplomats. London says non-Yemenis must obtain entry visa approval from inside Yemen, and the UK government's travel advice confirms that British citizens need a visa.

Key requirements

  • Approval comes before the sticker

The e-visa portal says visit, work and study visas are issued by embassies and consulates on the approval of the Immigration, Passports and Nationality Authority. Washington asks for an invitation letter from the Department of Immigration, and The Hague for an invitation from the Authority and one from the host addressed to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

  • Portrait photo, 6x4 cm

The Hague asks for "A recent colored passport photo with white background size (6x4) cm", the size its passport diagram shows as 40 mm wide and 60 mm high. The Arabic list on Washington's visa form also asks for two 6x4 photos.

  • No glasses, no hat

The Hague tells visa applicants not to wear medical glasses or sunglasses, and not to wear hats of any shape or form.

  • Number of photos

Washington asks for two recent, passport-sized colour photographs, including for diplomatic and official visas. The Hague and Frankfurt ask for one recent passport photo with the form, and London for one personal photo from Yemenis who hold another nationality.

  • Electronic photo for the multi-entry visa

On the e-visa portal, the multi-entry visa lists "A colored electronic personal photo size (4*6) to be modern with a white background". The other visa types list scans of the passport data page and a health certificate but no photo.

  • Health certificate and passport validity

Most routes ask for a passport valid for at least six months and a certificate showing that you are free of infectious diseases. Washington asks for a doctor's letter; The Hague for a medical fitness certificate.

Do's and don'ts

Do

  • Get the Immigration Authority's approval or invitation before applying
  • Use a recent colour photo on a plain white background
  • Use a portrait photo 4 cm wide and 6 cm high
  • Attach the photo where the form says "Attach photos here"
  • Bring a passport valid for at least six months

Don't

  • Do not wear glasses or sunglasses
  • Do not wear a hat or cap of any kind
  • Do not apply for a tourist visa in Washington; it is not issuing them
  • Do not send a passport with less than six months' validity left

Correct
Open-mouth smile
Head tilted
Too close: head too big
Too far: head too small
Busy background
Shadows on face or background
Glare on glasses

Illustrations, not real photos. The official rules above always take priority; some documents do not allow glasses at all.

Glasses

Take them off. The Hague's visa rules say "Not to wear medical or sun glasses", which covers prescription frames as well as tinted lenses. Washington's visa pages give no glasses rule.

Headwear and religious dress

The Hague says not to wear hats of any shape or form. Its rule is written for hats and does not mention religious head coverings for visa applicants; no other mission publishes a headwear rule for visas.

Babies and children

Applicants under 18 need both parents' consent. Washington asks for the mother's and father's approval in a letter signed and witnessed by a notary public, and The Hague for consent of both parents in a notarised letter. The photo rules are the same as for adults.

Embassy applications use printed photos attached to a paper form, sent by post or handed in: Washington asks for a prepaid return envelope with tracking, and Frankfurt for a prepaid envelope for returning the passport.

The e-visa portal takes scanned documents, and for the multi-entry visa an electronic 4*6 photo on white. It publishes no pixel or file size. A photo taken at home can be cropped to 4 x 6 cm and printed on a 4x6 inch sheet at a photo counter for an embassy application.

Where to submit the photo

Apply to the Yemeni embassy or consulate for your country once the approval is in place: Washington for US passport holders and residents, The Hague for the Netherlands, Sweden and Norway, Frankfurt for Germany and London for the UK. Frankfurt names the partner in Yemen who must request the permission: a business partner, the inviting person or organisation, a travel agent or a language institute.

Yemenis who hold another nationality apply in London with the visa form, their foreign passport and a copy, one personal photo and a copy of their Yemeni passport, ID card or family card. Washington waives the fee for dual US and Yemeni citizens who show Yemeni identification.

How to get your Yemen visa photo

  2. Take the photo. Follow the key requirements: approval comes before the sticker; portrait photo, 6x4 cm; no glasses, no hat; number of photos.
  3. Prepare a print or digital file. Embassy applications use printed photos attached to a paper form, sent by post or handed in: Washington asks for a prepaid return envelope with tracking, and Frankfurt for a prepaid envelope for returning the passport.

Yemen visa photo FAQ

A recent colour photo of 6x4 cm on a white background, as The Hague and the Arabic list on Washington's form put it. The Hague's passport diagram shows this size as 40 mm wide by 60 mm high. The e-visa portal's multi-entry visa asks for a 4*6 electronic photo on white.

Not through every mission. Washington says it is not issuing tourist visas, and The Hague says visa requests are on hold except for foreigners of Yemeni origin, international organisation staff, journalists and media delegations, and diplomats.

Yes. Washington and The Hague ask for an invitation from the Immigration, Passports and Nationality Authority, and Frankfurt says the authorisation must be requested by your partner in Yemen before you apply. On the e-visa portal the host submits the request.

The approval stage runs through the Authority's e-visa portal, where documents are uploaded. For most visa types the sticker is still issued by an embassy or consulate, so you also apply there with printed photos.

No. The Hague's visa instructions say not to wear medical or sun glasses and not to wear hats of any shape or form.

Two recent, passport-sized colour photographs for ordinary visas, and two original passport-sized photos for diplomatic and official visas. The Arabic note on the form specifies the size as 6x4.
