At a glance

For the Iraqi e-passport you bring no photo: the passport office or consulate takes it with your fingerprints. The Unified National Card has no published photo size, though the Detroit consulate asks for one recent photo. Visa photos depend on the channel: two 2 x 2 inch (51 x 51 mm) colour prints on white for the Washington embassy, or a digital photo with a white background for the e-visa.

Overview

Iraq's Ministry of Interior issues all three documents. Its Directorate of Civil Status, Passports and Residence handles passports and the Unified National Card, and its Residency Affairs Directorate runs the federal e-visa. In the Kurdistan Region, the regional Ministry of Interior runs passport offices for the same Iraqi passport and a separate e-visa portal for entry to the region.

The photo works differently for each. Passport staff capture the e-passport picture in person, so the only passport-related prints are for the laissez-passer issued abroad. National card applicants enrol in person, and only some missions ask for a print. Visa applicants either upload a photo to an e-visa portal or send prints with a paper application to an embassy.

At Iraqi embassies and consulates that have an e-passport or national card system, by appointment booked on the foreign ministry's platform. In the US, Detroit handles both and Los Angeles takes passport applications; Washington and Houston do not issue either.

No. Iraqi citizens are photographed at the passport office for the e-passport. Foreign visitors supply their own visa photo: two 2 x 2 inch colour prints on white for the Washington embassy, or a digital photo with a white background for the e-visa.

Its passport offices take applications for the federal Iraqi passport and forward them to Baghdad. For visitors, the Kurdistan Regional Government runs its own e-visa portal for entry to the region, separate from the federal e-visa platform.
