At a glance

Bahraini passports, now all e-passports, use a 4 x 6 cm (40 x 60 mm) print on white at NPRA counters, and a 32.5 x 43 mm digital image of at least 933 x 1244 pixels online. The iGA ID card uses the same two formats: a 4 x 6 cm print or a 32.5 x 43 mm upload on white. NPRA publishes no photo for the eVisa.

Overview

Two authorities set Bahrain's photo rules. The Nationality, Passports and Residence Affairs (NPRA) of the Ministry of Interior issues passports and visas, and the Information & eGovernment Authority (iGA) issues the identity card. Since March 2023 every ordinary passport has been an e-passport, so the e-passport photo terms are the passport photo rules.

Passport and ID card photos follow almost the same standard: colour, white background, taken within 6 months, face 70% to 80% of the photo, a few millimetres of space above the head, and no editing. The difference is how you hand them in. At service centres both take a printed photo with a 4 x 6 cm frame; on the national portal, bahrain.bh, you upload a digital image of 32.5 x 43 mm. The eVisa, applied for on NPRA's eVisa website, lists a passport copy and travel documents but no photo.

Frequently asked questions

They use the same two formats. NPRA counters ask for a 6 x 4 cm passport print (4 cm wide) and iGA centres for a print with a 4 x 6 cm frame. Online, NPRA's e-passport terms and iGA's ID card requirements both describe a 32.5 x 43 mm image at a minimum of 933 x 1244 pixels.

White for both the passport and the ID card. NPRA's e-passport terms say pure white, and iGA says the photo must be coloured with a white background. An older 2020 iGA notice described a grey background for the revamped ID card, but the current rules all say white.

No. NPRA says the e-passport image must not be altered in any way, and iGA says the ID card photo must not be altered using any photo editing programs. Take the photo against a white background with even light instead.

NPRA does not list one. The published eVisa requirements are a passport copy valid for more than 6 months, a hotel booking or address in Bahrain, a return ticket and a bank statement. If the application form asks for a photo, follow the instructions shown there.

No visa is needed. The national portal says citizens of the GCC countries may enter Bahrain using only their national ID cards, and every other nationality needs an entry visa.
