At a glance

The Royal Oman Police (ROP) issues all five documents. For the Omani passport, ID card and resident card, applicants usually attend in person and no size is published for adults' photos; the ROP asks for a 4 x 6 photo with a white background for young children, and embassies want white-background prints. Visa and work visa applications need two 4 x 6 cm photos or a digital photo.

Overview

The Royal Oman Police issues Omani passports and ID cards to citizens, resident cards to foreigners living in Oman, and entry visas, including work visas. Its General Directorate of Passports and Civil Status runs the passport and card services, which begin online on the ROP website and finish with a visit to a service centre, where citizens appear in official dress (from 15 for a passport, from ten for an ID card). Visas are applied for on the ROP eVisa portal, and a work visa also needs a Ministry of Labour permit first.

Photos differ more by channel than by document. At ROP offices in Oman, the current checklists ask adults for no photo; printed photos are named for children under seven, for passport and ID card renewals at Omani embassies, and for visa applications. Where a colour is given, it is white, and no current official page asks for blue.

Frequently asked questions

The ROP asks for a white background on the 4 x 6 photo of a young child for an ID card or a first resident card, and Omani embassies ask for white on passport and ID card renewal photos. The visa pages state no colour.

It is the only size the ROP publishes: for ID card and resident card photos of children under seven, and for the two personal photos on its visa-type pages. No size is published for the Omani passport.

Usually not. The current ROP and gov.om checklists for renewing a passport or ID card list no photo, and resident card applicants aged seven and over attend a civil status office in person. Visa applications are the exception: they need a digital photo or two 4 x 6 cm prints.

At an Omani embassy or consulate. The embassy in Abu Dhabi renews passports, for one year only, and ID cards, with two recent photos on a white background. Missions also issue a laissez-passer to return to Oman when a passport is lost.
