At a glance

Israel mostly takes the photo itself: for a biometric passport or teudat zehut, a Population and Immigration Authority clerk photographs you at the office, and 35 x 45 mm prints are needed only in exceptions such as temporary documents. Israeli missions abroad issue non-biometric passports and visas against 5 x 5 cm colour photos on white; US consulates write 2 x 2 inches for passports. Visa-exempt visitors apply for ETA-IL online.

Overview

An Israeli passport photo depends on where you apply: in Israel a PIBA clerk photographs you at the office, so there is no print or upload, while an Israeli embassy or consulate abroad needs two recent 5 x 5 cm colour photos of the full face on a white background, written as 2 x 2 inches at US consulates.

The Population and Immigration Authority (PIBA) issues Israeli passports, laissez-passers and the teudat zehut identity card, and decides on visas for foreigners. Since June 2017 the regular passports, laissez-passers and ID cards issued in Israel are biometric, and the facial photo is taken live at a PIBA office together with two fingerprints, so most applicants in Israel bring no photo at all.

Prints appear only at the edges. PIBA's print standard is 3.5 x 4.5 cm on a light grey or white background, without glasses, used for temporary documents and for people who cannot be photographed at an office. Israeli embassies and consulates, run by the Foreign Ministry, cannot issue biometric documents or ID cards; they issue non-biometric passports and entry visas and ask for 5 x 5 cm colour photos on white.

Frequently asked questions

Not in Israel for an ordinary application: PIBA photographs you at the office for a biometric passport or ID card. You need prints for a temporary document, in some exceptional cases, and whenever you apply through an Israeli embassy or consulate abroad.

The Foreign Ministry's pages for passports, laissez-passers and visas ask for colour photos measuring 5 x 5 cm on a white background. Consulates in the United States write the passport size as 2 x 2 inches.

No. Biometric travel documents cannot be issued outside Israel, and missions cannot issue or renew ID cards. A mission can issue a non-biometric passport valid for up to five years.

Nationals of visa-exempt countries apply online for ETA-IL, and the embassy pages list only a passport for it. Travellers who need a visa apply at an Israeli mission with two 5 x 5 cm colour photos on white.

PIBA takes passport and ID photos without glasses, and several missions ask for passport photos without glasses too. For visas lodged through TLScontact in China, glasses are allowed if the frames do not cover the eyes.

For a passport from an Israeli mission abroad, yes: the pages set the result, not who takes it. Crop your photo to 5 x 5 cm, or 2 x 2 inches for a US consulate, facing the camera with no glasses and a white background, and print it on photo paper; London advises a professional shop with good lighting. In Israel you need no photo, as PIBA takes it.
