Kazakhstan visa photo requirements
The 35 × 45 mm photo rules set by Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan, via the Adilet legal database for the Kazakhstan visa, with the official wording and sources.
Quick answer
What size is the Kazakhstan visa photo?
A Kazakhstan visa photo is 3.5 x 4.5 cm (35 x 45 mm), in colour or black and white, pasted onto the visa application form. It must show your full face clearly and match your current age, with no tinted glasses and no headwear unless you always wear it for national or religious reasons and wear it in your passport photo. The rules list no photo for the e-visa.
Foreign nationals who need a visa for Kazakhstan can get one in two ways. The single-entry e-visa is issued online through the Visa and Migration Portal (vmp.gov.kz), the government's own portal, to citizens of the countries on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs list, in the categories A3, B1, B3, B10, B12 and B12-1. It is generated from an invitation that your host in Kazakhstan has registered, and you may enter and leave on it only through the checkpoints of international airports.
Other visas are issued by Kazakh embassies and consulates, by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and by the migration service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and can be applied for at international airports in Kazakhstan. They use the visa application form, and this is where a photo is required: one 3.5 x 4.5 cm photo, pasted on the form, handed in with your passport, the invitation number or a petition, proof of payment of the consular fee and any extra documents your category needs.
These rules come from the joint order of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Internal Affairs of November 2016 on invitations and visas, amended many times since. Embassy pages repeat the photo rule word for word, and the embassy in London adds that since 1 January 2024 applicants aged 16 and over must also give fingerprints.

Key requirements
- One photo, 3.5 x 4.5 cm
The visa rules and embassy document lists ask for a colour or black-and-white photograph of 3.5 x 4.5 cm on the visa application form. The embassy in The Hague asks for one passport-size photo attached, not stapled, to the marked space in the upper right-hand corner of the form.
- Clear, full-face image
The photo pasted into the form must show a clear full-face image and correspond to your age at the time the visa is issued. The Hague also asks for no smiling.
- No tinted glasses
Glasses with darkened or tinted lenses are not allowed in the photo. The list published by the embassy in The Hague names sunglasses in particular.
- Headwear only as in your passport
You may wear a headdress only if constantly wearing it is an obligatory part of your national or religious affiliation, and only if you wear it in your passport photo too. Otherwise remove hats, caps and other head coverings.
- E-visa built from the invitation
For the e-visa, the rules require registration on the Visa and Migration Portal, the number and date of the invitation registered with the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and payment of the consular fee. No photo is listed. Before the visa is issued, you confirm that the invitation data match your passport.
- Fingerprints from age 16
The embassy in London states that since 1 January 2024 everyone aged 16 and above must complete fingerprint registration as a mandatory step when applying for a visa to Kazakhstan.
- Form signed in person
Fill in the visa application form legibly by hand or on the Visa and Migration Portal, in Kazakh, Russian or English, answer every question in full and sign it yourself. Legal representatives submit the documents for minor children.

Illustrations, not real photos. The official rules above always take priority; some documents do not allow glasses at all.
Glasses
The visa rules require a clear full-face image without tinted glasses, and the embassies in Washington, London and The Hague repeat the ban on darkened-lens goggles in their document lists. The older business visa list from The Hague also asks for sunglasses to be removed. Clear prescription glasses are not mentioned in the rules or on these embassy pages.
Headwear and religious dress
Visa photos are taken without a headdress. The exception is for people for whom constantly wearing a headdress is an obligatory attribute of their national or religious affiliation, provided they also appear in it in their passport photo. The embassy in The Hague words this as removing a hat, cap or other head covering unless it is worn for religious belief or ethnic background.
Babies and children
Legal representatives submit the visa documents for minor children on their behalf, and the photo rules are the same as for adults. Fingerprint registration applies from the age of 16, according to the embassy in London.
An e-visa is valid only for the person named on it and does not extend to accompanying persons, so each child travelling on an e-visa needs one in their own name, based on an invitation.
Printed and digital photos
A consular visa needs a printed photo, pasted onto the application form. Colour and black-and-white prints are both accepted, so a print from a 4x6 inch sheet made at a photo counter can be cut to size. The application form may also be completed on the Visa and Migration Portal, but neither the rules nor the embassy pages publish a file format, file size or pixel dimensions for a photo.
For the e-visa, the rules list only the invitation number and date and payment of the consular fee: the visa is generated from the data in your host's invitation, sent to your personal account on the portal and printed by you for passport control. If you replace your passport, the e-visa has to be obtained again.
Where to submit the photo
For an e-visa, register on the Visa and Migration Portal, enter the invitation number your host received from the migration service, check the details against your passport and pay the consular fee online. The visa then appears in your personal account; print it and show it with your passport at an international airport.
For a consular visa, apply to the Kazakh embassy or consulate for your country; the embassies in Washington, London and The Hague take documents by appointment booked online. Foreigners already in Kazakhstan extend or restore visas through the migration service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs or the State Corporation Government for Citizens, and some single-entry categories through the eGov portal.
