Turkmenistan visa photo requirements
The 30 × 40 mm photo rules set by Embassy of Turkmenistan, Vienna for the Turkmenistan visa, with the official wording and sources.
Quick answer
What size is the Turkmenistan visa photo?
Turkmen embassies mostly ask for 3 x 4 cm (30 x 40 mm) photos with a visa application: one in Vienna, two in colour in Ankara and two in Bucharest. Bucharest also lists two colour 3 x 4 photos for a tourist visa issued on arrival at Ashgabat airport. Ankara adds a personal data sheet with a 5 x 6 cm (50 x 60 mm) colour photo. London, Kuala Lumpur and New Delhi just want a recent passport-size photo glued to the form.
A Turkmen visa is normally obtained in two stages. First the State Migration Service of Turkmenistan grants permission to enter by issuing a letter of invitation. Your host in Turkmenistan requests it: a business partner for a business visa, or a Turkmen travel agency for a tourist visa. Then the visa sticker is put in your passport at a Turkmen embassy or consulate abroad, or on arrival at a border crossing point, including the international airports.
Photos go in with the paper application. Each embassy publishes its own checklist, and the sizes they name are 3 x 4 cm for the visa form and, in Ankara, 5 x 6 cm for a separate personal data sheet. Embassies that give no size ask for a recent passport-size photo, and several insist it is glued to the form, not stapled. The embassy checklists do not state a background colour.
The Service is also bringing in electronic visas. The state newspaper Golden Age reported on 30 September 2026 that mechanisms for issuing them were being introduced, and the Service now runs an e-visa portal. Its photo rules are not set out on the embassy pages, so check them in the portal when you apply there.

Key requirements
- Invitation letter first
Embassy visas are issued on the basis of a letter of invitation from the State Migration Service. The inviting company, organisation or person in Turkmenistan requests it, or a Turkmen travel agency for tourists. Washington and Kuala Lumpur say the letter is valid for 3 months from certification.
- 3 x 4 cm for the visa form
Vienna lists one 3 x 4 photo, both for an invitation requested through the embassy and for the visa sticker. Ankara wants two 3 x 4 colour photographs. Bucharest asks for the application form in two copies and two photos in 3 x 4 format.
- 5 x 6 cm on the personal sheet
Ankara says visa applications, written or electronic, go with a personal data sheet in the set form bearing a 5 x 6 colour photo. It names exceptions, among them diplomatic, service and exit visas and visas issued in humanitarian emergencies.
- Glue, never staple
London, Washington, Kuala Lumpur and New Delhi all ask for the photo to be glued to the visa application form. Kuala Lumpur adds that the form must not be folded or otherwise damaged, and that only its current edition is accepted.
- Photos for a visa on arrival
Bucharest says a tourist visa can be obtained at Ashgabat airport on presenting your passport, two coloured 3 x 4 photos and the original or a copy of the invitation letter, and paying the fee. Paris says any visa type can be issued at the border to holders of an invitation letter.
- Transit and driver visas
London asks transit applicants for a transit visa form and a questionnaire, each with a glued photo. Ankara lists two 3 x 4 photographs for a transit visa, and Bucharest three 3 x 4 photos for a driver visa.
Do's and don'ts
Do
- Ask your host or a Turkmen travel agency to request the invitation letter.
- Bring 3 x 4 cm photos unless your embassy names another size.
- Glue each photo to its form.
- Use colour prints for Ankara and for a visa on arrival.
- Use a photo taken within the last 6 months.
- Write dates on the form as day-month-year.
Don't
- Do not staple photos to the application form.
- Do not fold or damage the visa application form.
- Do not travel on an invitation letter more than 3 months old.
- Do not hand Vienna a printed phone picture of your passport as the copy.
- Do not use an outdated edition of the visa application form.

Babies and children
Each traveller applies separately, so a child needs a visa form and photos of their own. The embassy in New Delhi publishes a list for a foreign child under 18 with a Turkmen parent: colour copies of the child's passport and birth certificate, the parents' documents, a request letter from the Turkmen parent, the completed form and two photos of the child sized 3 x 4.
In Ankara, a Turkmen citizen can obtain the entry visa for a foreign spouse or child at the embassy's consular department. The list includes the citizen's request, copies of the family's passports, birth and marriage certificates and residence permits, and a special visa application for the relative.
Printed and digital photos
The embassy route is paper: the photos are glued to the visa application form and, in Ankara, a 5 x 6 cm colour photo goes on the personal data sheet. Vienna's form has to carry a QR code generated when you complete it, and Paris asks for the form with the photo attached and the generated QR code.
Several stages may each need a photo, such as an invitation requested through the embassy and then the visa itself, so print a few. A digital photo can be cropped to 3 x 4 cm (30 x 40 mm), or 5 x 6 cm for the Ankara sheet, and printed on a 4x6 inch sheet at a photo counter. Applicants using the new e-visa portal upload their documents online instead.
Where to submit the photo
Apply at the Turkmen embassy or consulate for your country. London takes applications in person at its consular section. Washington accepts them in person or by mail, Vienna in person by appointment or by registered mail, and New Delhi in person only. Several embassies keep your original passport while the visa is processed.
With an invitation letter you can also get the visa sticker on arrival. Washington and Bucharest name the airport in Ashgabat, and Paris says the fee is then charged at the urgent rate. London says the information on your form will be reflected in the visa and must match what was sent to the State Migration Service.

The Ankara embassy says visa applications go with a personal data sheet in the set form carrying a 5 x 6 colour photo. It lists exceptions, such as diplomatic, service and exit visas. The visa form itself takes 3 x 4 photos.
No. London, Washington, Kuala Lumpur and New Delhi all ask for the photo to be glued rather than stapled. Kuala Lumpur also refuses forms that are folded or otherwise damaged.
For a visa from an embassy or on arrival, yes. The letter is issued by the State Migration Service at the request of your host, or of a Turkmen travel agency if you are a tourist. Washington says it is valid for 3 months from certification.
The State Migration Service is introducing one. The state newspaper Golden Age reported on 30 September 2026 that mechanisms for issuing electronic visas were being introduced, and the Service runs an e-visa portal. Check the portal for its photo upload rules, which the embassy pages do not give.
London asks for a transit visa form and a questionnaire, each with a glued photo, so two in all. Ankara lists two 3 x 4 photographs for a transit visa. The transit invitation itself takes about a month at the State Migration Service, according to London.
A child applies with their own form and photos. For a foreign child under 18 with a Turkmen parent, New Delhi lists two photos of the child sized 3 x 4, with copies of the passport and birth certificate, the parents' documents and a request letter from the Turkmen parent.
